Why Supervision and Support Matter in Youth Work
My name is Emma, and I’m one of Edmen’s Support & Supervision Coordinators. Before moving into this role, I worked within Edmen’s service delivery team, supporting both our Youth Workers and our clients across a range of placements. That experience gave me a deep understanding of just how critical the right support and supervision is for Youth Support Workers - especially in such a demanding and high-impact environment.
And that’s why I want to talk to you about something that’s not always visible, but absolutely vital in this line of work: supervision and support.
What Supervision & Support Actually Means
In youth work, supervision isn’t just ticking off boxes or sitting through another meeting. It’s a structured, collaborative space where you can grow, both personally and professionally. Think of it as your time to pause, unpack and reset. Whether you're celebrating a win or navigating a tough shift, supervision provides the space to reflect, learn and come back stronger.
Why It’s So Important
🧠 Reflect and Learn
Supervision offers you a safe environment to process what’s going on, whether it’s a complex behaviour from a young person or your own emotional response to a shift. Reflection leads to growth.
💪 Build Confidence
I know how confronting this job can be. Supervision gives you the clarity and practical tools to handle tough situations. With support, your confidence builds - and confident youth workers create better outcomes.
🌱 Prioritise Self-Care
Working in youth care isn’t easy, it can be emotionally exhausting. That’s why support systems matter. I’ve seen firsthand how burnout can creep in in this field of work. Through supervision, you'll learn strategies to protect your own wellbeing while staying present for others.
⚖️ Make Ethical Choices
You’ll often find yourself in situations where the “right thing” isn’t always obvious. Supervision helps you work through ethical dilemmas with professional integrity, always keeping the young person's best interest at heart.
The Tools That Make Supervision Work
To get the most from your support sessions, bring these tools along:
- Open Communication: Be honest and real about how things are going. You’re not expected to be perfect, just present.
- Active Listening: It goes both ways. Listen with the intent to understand, not just respond.
- Reflective Practice: Take the time to think critically about what happened on shift- and what you could do differently next time.
- Growth Mindset: Be open to feedback, new strategies and the idea that you’re always learning.
My Top Tips for Getting the Most Out of Your Sessions
As someone who’s worked closely with youth workers and now supports them through supervision, here are my tips for making your sessions as valuable and impactful as possible:
✅ Come Prepared: Bring a few points - good or bad - that stood out during your last shifts. What felt challenging? What went well?
✅ Be Honest: This is your space. Don’t shy away from the hard stuff, your supervisor is there to support, not judge.
✅ Ask Questions: There are no silly questions. Curiosity is how we grow.
✅ Set Goals: Use your sessions to work towards achievable, practical goals that keep you moving forward.
✅ Take Time to Reflect Afterwards: What did you take away from the session? How will you apply it on your next shift?
Supervision and support aren’t extras, they're your foundation. They keep you grounded, motivated and growing. They ensure you’re not just surviving the work but thriving in it.
Whether you’re just starting out or already on the floor, remember: you don’t have to do it alone. With the right support, you can build a career that not only changes lives, but sustains your own.
You've got this!
