From Warehousing to Youth Work: Ryschard's Career Journey
We’re privileged to work with incredible individuals like Ryschard, a dedicated Residential Youth Worker whose passion for supporting young people shines through in everything she does. As a proud mum of three and a loving wife of 20 years, Ryschard brings her nurturing spirit and lived experience to her role, creating a lasting impact on the lives of the children she supports. Below, she shares her inspiring journey, from her early career to finding her calling with Edmen.
From Warehousing to Youth Work: A New Beginning
Before joining Edmen, Ryschard spent years in warehousing, a physically demanding role where she honed valuable skills as a team leader. “I learned the importance of communication, building relationships, and supporting others,” she reflects. While these skills were essential, warehousing wasn’t her forever career. Her heart was elsewhere - drawn to making a difference in the lives of young people.
Ryschard’s inspiration to become a Youth Worker stem from her own childhood. Raised by her grandparents, who provided love and stability, she also faced trauma and hardship. “I was told I was ‘nobody’s child’ and that ‘nobody cared’ about me,” she recalls. Those painful words fuelled her determination to be a safe, supportive presence for young people in care. “My purpose is to advocate for them, walk alongside them and remind them they matter,” she says.
Why Edmen? A Supportive Path to a Dream Career
Ryschard’s transition into youth work was made possible by Edmen’s unwavering support. As someone new to the industry, she was given the opportunity to study while gaining hands-on experience. “Edmen made my transition smooth and supported me every step of the way,” she shares. This support became even more meaningful during a personal loss earlier this year. When Ryschard lost her sister, Edmen’s team rallied around her, checking in regularly and offering heartfelt care. “In my previous jobs, I often felt like just a number, but at Edmen, I feel valued, seen, and appreciated,” she says. From small gestures like a “thank you” text to celebrating her achievements, Edmen has shown Ryschard she’s part of a family.
A Day in the Life: Rewards and Challenges
As a Residential Youth Worker, Ryschard embraces the unpredictability of her role. “No two days are the same,” she says. “I enter every shift with an open mind and no expectations.” Whether working with children as young as three or supporting new placements, the rewards are immense - whether it’s witnessing a child win a school award, find their voice or greet her with a hug. The hardest part? Leaving at the end of a shift. “When young ones cling to me or call me ‘Mum,’ it’s challenging but meaningful,” she shares. “I know I’m filling a void for them in that moment.”
Ryschard’s favourite part of the job is being a trusted presence for children in care. “Most kids just want to be at home with their families, so being there, building trust, and ensuring they’re heard is such a privilege,” she says. Even on tough days, she stays late to support her team or help settle the children, knowing the trust they place in her is sacred.
Advice for Aspiring Youth Workers
For those considering a career in youth work, Ryschard’s advice is clear: “If you’re passionate about it, go for it. It’s one of the most rewarding careers if your heart is in the right place.” She emphasizes the importance of self-care, encouraging new workers to make their days off count and “fill their cup” to bring their best selves to the children they support. “The good days will always outweigh the tough ones,” she assures.
A Heartfelt Thank You to Edmen
Reflecting on her first year with Edmen, Ryschard is filled with gratitude. From her colleagues Jacquelene, Jess, Maria, Erin and many others, she’s experienced endless encouragement and care. “I can’t thank Edmen enough for giving me the opportunity to share my nurturing nature and live out my dream,” she says. For Ryschard, youth work is more than a job - it’s a calling. And with Edmen’s support, she’s able to live that calling every day.
