From Employment Services to Youth Work: Todd's Career Journey
Todd spent 15 years building a career in employment services but felt like something was missing. When he came across an Edmen advertisement during a period of reflection about what he really wanted from his work, it didn't take long to realise he'd found it.
"Supporting young people is something I feel very passionately about, especially those who have had Child Safety intervene in their lives."
A Career built on purpose
After a decade and a half in employment services, Todd knew he wanted more from a job that felt meaningful. Browsing for a career change within the community services sector, an Edmen listing caught his eye and the more he read, the more it resonated.
The young people Edmen supports, those navigating the child protection system and the instability that so often comes with it, were exactly the people Todd felt called to help. He made the leap into casual youth work and hasn't looked back.
What a typical day looks like
No two days are the same, but every day is about showing up for the young person. That might mean driving them to appointments, cooking a meal together, supporting them through daily routines, or simply spending time with them in a way that feels encouraging and uplifting.
Youth work is hands-on and relational. It's not about managing young people from a distance it's about being present, consistent, and genuinely invested in how they're going.
Understanding the young people you work with
One of the most important things Todd has learned in his youth worker role is that every young person carries their own story and that story shapes how they experience the world around them.
"Knowing as much as possible about the young person, what their triggers are, and also what helps them feel better, is essential to being the best support you can be," he says.
For Todd, this isn't a challenge it's part of what makes working in community services meaningful. Taking the time to understand a young person deeply, and responding with patience and knowledge rather than frustration, is what separates a good youth worker from a great one.
The moments that matter most
One experience in particular has stayed with Todd. A moment where he was able to step in for a young boy at the right time, in the right way and the impact went far beyond that single interaction.
"I was able to protect him in that moment," he recalls. "But what stayed with me was what it meant beyond that moment. He knew someone was there for him. He felt safe and that changed things going forward."
Those are the moments that make the hard days worth it for community services workers across Australia.
His advice for anyone thinking about it
Todd's biggest piece of advice is simple: flexibility and a willingness to work with others will take you far in casual community services work. And on the days that feel overwhelming, come back to why you started.
"The wins and rewarding parts of this job outweigh the challenging times - reminding myself of that is what keeps me going."
