Day in the life of a Disability Support Worker - Eunice
Meet Eunice - Edmen's Disability Support Worker
In our latest installment of Day in the Life, we sat down with Edmen Disability Support Worker, Eunice. We chat about how she first got into the sector, what she loves most about working with Edmen and get her advice for others thinking about a career in disability support.
Tell us a bit about yourself
My name is Eunice, I am an Edmen Disability Support Worker in Adelaide. Before I started with Edmen I was an international student and was studying my Cert 3 in Disability Support in Sydney. Edmen made the application process easy after I moved to Adelaide and finished my course. Since working with Edmen, I have worked at two disability support providers in South Australia - EBL and Lighthouse Disability.
What do you like most about working with Edmen?
Edmen have always been very accommodating to ensure I am happy in my work environment. Haydn is my Support Coordinator in Adelaide and he is always looking out for me – he’s my guy!
At Edmen I feel like feedback is taken seriously and dealt with in an objective way. They provide support workers with a platform to raise concerns and encourage transparent communication. If there are any issues, there are channels for you to speak up. You feel like you have a voice at Edmen.
It is also a very multicultural organisation and I have made a lot of great friends along the way – some of whom are like sisters to me now! Edmen puts a big emphasis on culture, and this definitely filters down to the support workers on the frontline – we look out for each other.
What does a typical day at work look like?
When I get to work, I have my temperature taken and I also do a RAT test every 3 days. There is a communication book that we read ahead of each day, so we are across the client’s schedule and the days’ activities.
During the day, activities we do with the clients include 1:1 support which might include taking them out or going with them to their community programs. We have lunch and/or dinner with our clients and support them outside of the home. Sometimes we go hiking or horse riding and we also get to participate in these recreational activities, which is fun!
What do you think makes a great disability support worker?
Empathy is needed to support people in the way that is best for them. Sometimes things do not always go to plan, so you have to be agile in how you approach your work. It’s important to be able to put yourself in the shoes of the clients and treat them how you’d like to be treated.
How long have you been a disability support worker?
Almost two years now!
What do you love most about your work?
I find the work really fulfilling. I have grown a lot as a person since becoming a disability support worker, and it has assured me that I have the soft skills like empathy, teamwork and patience to make a difference in other people’s lives. These are skills I will take with me throughout life.
What’s your advice for others thinking about disability support as a career path?
Go for it! At Edmen, you do need to meet some minimum employment requirements to get started, but it is a place where your voice will be heard. I think it’s a great place to start your career in disability support. So, try it would be my advice!
